Power: A Poem Read by the Author
"All you have is your fire
And the place you need to reach
Don't you ever tame your demons
But always keep 'em on a leash..."
~ Arsonist's Lullaby, Hozier

It was a brief, intense connection. But in the time I was with “H,” he helped me discover numerous things about my body and my psyche — also learned much about control, power, and the give and take of letting go. I was reminded that sometimes people come into our lives for just a short while to help us along our path, but they aren’t our destination. There’s poetry in that. There’s poetry in me.
power: a poem
resistance is power
or so I’ve been told -
top from the bottom
to keep a strong hold -
but on what?
counterfeit dignities
defined by dark ages?
fragmented confidence
forged in mock cages?
for when steel meets flesh
and my eyes are unsighted
i confess to the strength
in being...delighted…
by restraints on my wrists
ankles likewise bound -
collar and leash
different…profound
“let go, kitten”
you coax, you say -
as you pull and you push
so my walls can give way -
to that…other place?
beyond soft confines
of pillows and bed
far away from the voices
that live in my head -
“oh yes, please”
i struggle to sputter
through the gag in my mouth
and the “good girls” you utter
yet, I hold and I hold
tensed, flexed -
until puddles of squirt
remove all the pretext -
of the truth in those moments
so raw yet so sweet
submission is power
and I…am replete
